Important Definitions
Homeschool: Simply educating a child while they are at home, reporting to a specific location at a specific time of the day is not required.
Instructors: Qualified and credentialed individuals to teach a course subject and or design a curriculum
Chaperone/Teacher Assistant: Not holding a specific credential but supports the instructor in executing and keeping to educational plans for students.
Why we believe homeschooling is so effective?
The efficiency offered through homeschooling is second to none. In traditional schooling, students endure class lengths of about 2 hours and 15 minutes for each subject. In class the instructor has a responsibility to lecture approximately 20 students at a time, and must ensure that each student comprehends the same material collectively before moving on to explain the next concept. With these conditions, there may be time to do practice problems as a group but homework is routinely assigned as the most reliable method for the instructor to observe the students grasp of the material. How the student performs on homework assignments ultimately impacts their final grade. If help is needed, tutoring or support from parents is required for students with alternative learning styles. Parents commonly get home from work no later than 6:00 PM and must squeeze in dinner, extracurricular activities, going over homework and any family bonding time before going to bed and repeating the process all over again the following day.
This is not the case in private education/homeschooling. Due to smaller class size, the instructor will have significantly less students (1-6) at a time to teach a new concept before moving on. This condenses the time spent on lecture, while increasing the time spent on practice problems and application. Furthermore, this reduces the need for homework as the instructor can observe if the student is grasping the material in real time and make adjustments more readily. Finally, and most importantly, family bonding time increases as well as time available for extracurricular activities or creative projects.
With this description, it is understandable how students that receive a private/homeschooled education receive higher grades, achieve higher SAT scores and are accepted into the most competitive colleges and universities. Therefore, if one is ever asked; Why did a family choose this style of education for their children? Well, if they are given the opportunity to do so, this visual description and the data speaks for itself.
The dedicated teaching style that homeschooling offers, contributes to students' success. Homeschooling requires significant parent involvement and research supports that parent involvement critically impacts children's academic success (Nokali, Bachman, Votruba-Drzal).
For some students, the instructor can be one's own parent(s), qualified and educated to teach and design the content for specific subjects.
However, parents do not have to be experts themselves, but can selectively partner with competitive programs available locally or online, or hire experienced individual consultants to teach subjects.
This offers an 'a la cart' method, where students learn the core curriculum and creative subjects from highly competitive and experienced professionals that are passionate to teach students in small class settings, while utilizing out of the box strategies and resources to maximize the learning experience.
